Echologics Engineering Inc. (TiEQuest 2007 Winner)

Echologics Engineering Inc was  co-founded by Aercoustics Engineering Ltd and NRC’s Institute for Research in Construction. Echologics has developed proprietary acoustic leak detection methods that have proven to be highly effective on plastic and high value large diameter pipes. In doing so, it has drawn on decades of experience in acoustics to develop and advance this technology beyond the current state-of-the-art. The technology has also been leveraged for non destructive pipe wall thickness assessment. With aging pipe distribution networks, this technology will help utilities identify badly corroded pipes for replacement. With ageing infrastructure and a world wide fresh water shortage, Echologics will leverage it’s advanced technologies into economic success.

Marc Bracken, P.Eng: President, has a B.A.Sc and M.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto, with 20 years of experience as an acoustical engineer. He has managed many large engineering projects. Currently he is the president of Echologics, and he oversees R&D activities. He holds patents for pipe wall assessment technology.

Shabbir Yusuf, P. Eng, Vice President, is an Electrical Engineer from IIT Kanpur and MBA from IIM Bangalore, who has 20 years experience in acoustical engineering, operations, sales and marketing. Within Echologics he runs operations, manufacturing, purchase, and vendor development.

Glass Onion (TiEQuest 2007 Participant)

Glass Onion is an agricultural technology company that intends to be a leader in technologies and products that target contemporary challenges in the allium industry. Alliums (members of the onion family) include vegetables such as onions, garlic, leeks, chives and so on. In order to strategically target the allium industry, Glass Onion’s initial undertaking is to become the first producer/supplier of certified clean garlic seed (virus and disease free) to the North American market.  By using Glass Onion clean seed, garlic growers can expect to nearly double their yields, achieve top product grades and sell the majority of their fresh garlic at premium wholesale prices. This high-tech seed product will be the primary focus of our Greenhouse Production Division and will be an essential component in the expansion of the North American garlic industry, that is now flooded with Asian imports to meet consumer demand.

A future goal for Glass Onion is to promote the grading of onions and garlic by pungency. Our Flavour Chemistry Division intends to develop and sell a pungency assessment tool that will allow for cheap and easy grading of onions or garlic by growers, distributors and retailers.  Is it hot or not? Glass Onion will have the answer.

Dr. Jamie Doran is the President of Glass Onion. He earned a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the University of Guelph, a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Trent University and a B.Ed. from Queen’s University. He currently holds a Martin Walmsley Fellowship for Technological Entrepreneurship, and has used the funds to start the Glass Onion Corporation. His academic research was a spin-off from a minor directorate of the space program that sought data on growing alliums (onions, garlic, etc.) in space situations. He studied the effects of environment on gas exchange rates and flavour levels, under controlled conditions. A variety of marketable technologies were identified in Doran’s research and paved the way for Glass Onion to revolutionize the allium industry.

Mr. Jeff Huber is Vice President of Glass Onion. He earned his M.Sc. in Environmental Biology and a B.Sc. in Horticulture Science and Business from Guelph University. His expertise centers on optimized greenhouse production as well as new greenhouse technologies, such as sensory probes, soilless growth substrates and greenhouse crop management systems.  He is particularly interested in promoting the use of environmentally friendly growth substrates and feels they could play a role in the greenhouse production of clean garlic seed.  He is currently working as a Field Scientist for SRI Inc. as part of a First Job Fellowship awarded by the Ontario Centres of Excellence.

E-Accessibility Solutions (TiEQuest 2007 Participant)

e-Accessibility Solutions makes websites accessible to the physically disabled through
the web-based deployment of assistive technology (AT).

Millions of North Americans with physical disabilities are unable, because of dexterity
limitations, to access the web using a conventional keyboard and/or mouse. Readingrelated
difficulties constitute another common challenge as well. For individuals facing
associated barriers, the web can only be accessed through the use of assistive technology
(AT).

While leading organizations are committed to designing websites that conform to W3C
standards, until recently it simply wasn’t feasible to offer AT to website visitors.
Accordingly, for the many individuals who are unable to access the AT they require, the
web remains far from reach.

e-Accessibility Solutions brings the cost-effective mass deployment of AT into the realm
of possibility. Our flagship product is a browser that incorporates all the features that
anyone with any physical disability – including quadriplegia – could possibly require to
access the web.

This browser can be made available to any website’s visitors through a link where it can
be downloaded at no charge. In a matter of moments, all the AT that any individual with
any physical disability could possibly require to access the site is freely available. It is a
high impact, turn-key offering that can be licensed by any website on a subscriptionbasis.
Enhance the independence, engagement and participation of all potential visitors to your
organization’s website by fostering an online environment inclusive of everyone with
physical disabilities. Join our growing network of accessible sites by contacting us at
